Part 2: Description of the career of Micheal Graham

2. What drove you into your industry?

When I was 15 I started at college I was really into cricket and the Painting and Decorator tutor was also into cricket. So he sort of took me under his wing and guided me through onto an apprenticeship via CITB

3. How long have you been in this profession?

34 years.

4. Why did you join the company?

I'd been working for companies for a good few years and I wanted to start my own business as I wanted to give others the chance to find work too!

5. What has been the most interesting job you've worked on?

We did a cottage a few years ago which was part of the National Trust. The work we did was really good and was included in The Decorator, a national trade magazine.

Part 3: Job and missions:

6. Briefly sum up your company.

A small and conscientious company dedicated to detail.

7. What is your target audience?

My target would probably be people in my age group. The industry has changed a lot so we adapted our target audience to accommodate the ever changing way that people find new services.

8. What is a typical day like?

I'm up at around 7am and then I'll go for a 45 min walk. We're on site about 9am and then I'll be  finished up when the job is done.

9. What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?

I like the fact that the job is very straightforward with a huge amount of focus on the details.

Good feedback is always a real thrill to hear as well.

10. What qualifications did you need

City and Guild was the one that I did in the 1980"s, launched by Margaret Thatcher. I went all the way up to advanced crafts which took about 7 years all together. Furthermore I'm also a PDA member and I have a Gold CSCS Card.

11. What do you consider to be the most important aspects of your job?

Customer satisfaction at the end of the day is paramount.

Part 5: Developments for Michael Graham Decorators Ltd

13. How do you see your industry changing in the next few years?

For me it's becoming more and more internet based. This has meant that there is a reliance on referrals and good images to prove the quality of the work. This is a really good thing in my eyes as it helps the customer make the right choice at the end of the day.

14. How do you keep up to date with important industry news?

The PDA sends me emails with regulation changes. For example there are certain oils that they are using which can be dangerous.
